Today we practiced inserting and maintaining nasogastric feeding tubes. This is a skill that we have to practice on the dummies, although there were some maniacs who wanted to practice it on other classmates. I admit, I am a bit curious what it feels like. And being able to eat while you sleep seems incredibly efficient.

The expression of open-mouthed, trembling terror seems wholly apropos here. "Holy shit! I've been orifice-tubed!"
Medge, will you learn how to fix that hole in his throat? If this were a triage situation, it seems like that would come first.
Hi, I lurked to your blog from Arnie's because I have a deep appreciation of the nursing profession because of my time in hospitals. Nurses are the ones who make you feel safe even more than doctors.
I had a nasalgastric tube when I was in a really bad car accident in high school. I had a broken sinus cavity, a ruptured intestine that was so bad that my parents had to say their goodbyes to me before surgery just in case, major face lacerations, sprained everything, bit off my tongue and the NG tube remains my WORST memory of the whole experience. Seconded by getting it removed. It's the only time my mom felt like she had to leave the room.
hank is spot on. I think that manikin might be modeled after my exact expression. Not to sound like Tim Gunn but it's literally stunning.
